Work-Life Balance
A few years ago, a friend shared a different perspective with me that I still remember to this day.
Many of us are familiar with the concept of “work-life” balance, often illustrated in the image on the left In that illustration, work and life are presented as two separate entities, something to be divided and managed independently. We are taught to distinguish clearly between the two, as though balance comes from keeping them apart.
My friend offered another way of looking at it.
He shared that work, regardless of its context, will always be part of our lives. It may not necessarily be corporate work or an office role. It could be housework, caregiving, or even activities we enjoy, such as exercise. In one form or another, work is woven into life. It is inevitable.
In the illustration on the right the focus shifts. Instead of separating work and life, the emphasis is on balancing what our bodies truly need: rest. Time to recuperate, rejuvenate, and recharge. Rest allows our bodies and minds to recover, so that we can wake up refreshed, recalibrate our thoughts, and reflect on why and what we need to do next.
As January quietly approaches and another year of life’s adventures unfolds, here’s a gentle reminder: remember to rest Love and take care of yourself first, so that you are able to do the same for others.
Have a great year ahead!
