Entitlement is NOT Privilege
As the year draws to a close, many of us are thinking about bonuses, payouts, performance reviews, or new opportunities. It’s natural to ask: What’s in it for me? It’s important to know our rights, but entitlement is not the same as privilege.
Entitlement is what is contractually or legally owed. Privilege, on the other hand, is an opportunity or benefit granted through trust, effort, or circumstance, and it is never guaranteed.
Recognising this distinction encourages gratitude, humility, and the continued pursuit of excellence, even when our efforts are not always publicly acknowledged. It’s also equally important to remember that recognition, rewards, and opportunities are privileges, not obligations. They are earned through consistent effort, integrity, and collaboration.
People are the greatest assets of any organisation's health. Their physical, mental, and emotional state is integral to the organisation's wealth and success. Providing opportunities and support responsibly helps nurture a culture of fairness, motivation, and mutual respect.
Whether we are giving or receiving, one principle remains: nothing should be taken for granted, and no one should gain at the expense of others. Excellence, purpose, and ethical responsibility should guide our actions, not the expectation of external reward. We should aim not only to do what is fair, but also what is right - for what is fair may not always be right, but that is another thought to explore.
As we step into a new year, may we all reflect on the value of gratitude, the meaning of privilege, and the “why” purpose behind the work we do.
