Just One More

“Just one more” is a phrase we have probably heard and said countless times often without much thought. Yet, hidden within these three simple words is a delicate tension between perseverance, self-control, and addiction. The line separating them is faint, and it is easy to cross without even realising it.

In one context, “just one more” speaks of of Perseverance. .

Just one more try. Let’s attempt it again and see if it works. When it does, we celebrate the effort and resilience that brought us there. When it doesn’t, it invites reflection: What can I change? How can I approach this differently? Is there a better or more efficient way forward? Or perhaps, is this time to stop? In this sense, “just one more” becomes a sign of growth, learning, and determination before we move on to face the next challenge.

In another context, it points to Self-Control.

Just one more episode. Just one more bite. These moments are familiar to many of us, especially when we are tired, stressed, or seeking comfort. There is nothing inherently wrong with a little indulgence. The deeper question is whether we are making a conscious choice, or simply giving in out of habit.

Then there is the more subtle and dangerous edge of the phrase: Addiction.

A lack of self-control when repeated often enough can quietly take root. Addiction does not only involve harmful substances. It can appear in forms we dismiss as insignificant such as doom scrolling, overeating, excessive screen time, and so on. Over time, these small “just one more” moments can take a toll not just on the body and mind, but also on the soul and sometimes on those closest to us, especially family.

This brings to mind a game many of us are familiar with: UNO. The goal is simple: to be the first player to empty your hand by matching cards, and to shout “UNO!” when you are left with just one. (No debates about the usage of both Draw 2s and Draw 4s for now, haha).

The game works because it has an ending. Once a round finishes, a new one can begin. Without an ending, you would be stuck in an endless loop, unable to move forward or progress. It would be meaningless.

Life is much the same. We move through different rounds and chapters. Some we wish would never end, and others we hope will end as soon as possible. Yet, whether we are ready or not, every chapter eventually comes to a close.

So, what is your “just one more” that you need to lay down? What is the last card you need to place so that a new beginning can take shape?

As the year draws to an end, perhaps this season can serve as a gentle reminder to prepare your final card and step into a brand-new year with intention, purpose and direction.
