Take the First Step

We’re already a few days into 2026. I hope the year has started well for you. And if it hasn’t, that’s okay. Here’s the truth: this is just the beginning.

Beginnings are never easy. .

A couple of years ago, I decided to build a healthier routine by waking up early for morning walks. I’ve lost count of how many times I hit the snooze button. Some days I’m tired, some days I’m lazy, and sometimes I secretly hope it rains so I can just stay in bed. Sure, I could walk on a treadmill, but I enjoy being outdoors and seeing nature and hearing its sounds.

I managed to keep this routine over the years, until one day… I fell really ill.

I had a prolonged cough that lasted for months and was eventually hospitalised and for the first time, diagnosed with asthma and sinusitis. Thank God, I eventually regained my health, slowly.

Getting back to my morning routine wasn’t easy, but I can honestly say I’m getting there.

I’ll admit I still struggle to get out of bed from time to time, especially on cool mornings when you’re nicely tucked under the covers. But I remind myself that this discipline is something I want to cultivate.

It’s a journey, and often the hardest part is simply taking that first step. In this case, getting out of bed.

January is a month of beginnings and a time of transitions.

Maybe you’re setting new goals, choosing a new direction in your career, taking on new commitments, or closing chapters that no longer serve you.

A lot of the time, we hesitate to start something new because we’re afraid—afraid of the unknown, afraid of the effort it requires, or afraid of whether we can stick with it, or doesn't turn up the way we expected.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. - Lao Tzu

All we need to do is take that first step.. What is there to lose?

I often ask myself:

Would I rather regret doing nothing, or regret taking a chance?

We may not get it right the first time. We might fail or face setbacks. But when we fall, we get back up. We reflect, adjust, and try again.

Every journey, no matter how long, begins with that one brave step forward - and that step could change everything.
