The 3-Minute Pause

“The aim isn’t calm. It’s attention.”

Welcome to Pocket Notes: one short piece every Wednesday, starting on 6 January 2027. Most advice about slowing down assumes you have an hour, a quiet room and a lavender candle. Most of us have three minutes and an unanswered email, so every note ends with a pause built for that.

It isn’t meditation, and it won’t promise to make you calm. The point is to see what’s actually in front of you before the rest of the day decides for you.

Here’s how to start:

Pause

30s: Stop what you're doing. Phone face down, feet on the floor, one slow breath out.

Notice

60s: Say "I notice…" three times: something you can see, something you can hear, something you can feel. Small is fine. Ordinary is better.

Live

90s: Write one line, or decide one small thing you'll do next. Then carry on with your day.

The first Pocket Note arrives on Wednesday 6 January. Until then, try the three minutes once this week and see what you notice.

Thank you for reading!
